I was just visiting another image and this beauty was in the thumbs along the bottom .. it caught my eye again, and here I am again. I read what we wrote to each other a while back. What I was remembering could well have been a different location ... different bridge ... different river. But if it was the same general location, it would have been a ways further to the left. If my husband weren't sound asleep, I'd ask him the name of the restaurant. He's got one of those memories, I'm sure he'd remember. I will try to remember to ask him tomorrow (my memory is somewhat meh?). But .. it has been over 30 years now ... (so hard to believe) ... so whatever it was, as you said, it may no longer be there at all.

I guess that long ago maybe the River Cafe was Italian. It became quite famous in the middle 80s when Regional American Cuisine became a thing. There were 3 Chefs there (David Burke, Larry Forgione, and Charlie Palmer) who made huge names for themselves there with the new style dishes. But before that it might have been Italian, I only know that it opened in 1977. It certainly might have been decorated in the way you mentioned, it always looks great around holidays. There is another Italian restaurant just up the road that was the original Grimaldi's but that again was mostly pizza. (famous for its coal-fired ovens). There is another famous restaurant almost under the Williamsburg Bridge too but that has always been Peter Luger's Steak House (THE BEST) Wish I could help your memory more but that's it I'm afraid.

Chris, this is the one you're using for your Google+ page ... and even though I commented there and I already commented here, I just had to come back and have another visit with it and leave another note. This is such an amazing, spectacular image ... even the larger size here on FAA doesn't do it justice. You've really captured lightning in a bottle, as the old saying goes. Of course you always do ... but this image in particular really is incredible. I have to tell you, when I was preggers with my son, I flew up to NYC for a quick visit with my husband (he was working up there briefly at the time) and we had dinner just about where you must have been standing ... maybe a little more to the left ... it's been awhile ... hard to recall exactly ... but it was a fabulous Italian restaurant with the most amazing view. It was Halloween, and the place was lit up with glorious and fun jack-o-lanterns. So. You've brought back a wonderful memory!!!! Am tweeting and FB'ing this beauty as I've already faved and voted for it.

Chris Lord replied:

There is an ice cream place there and one rather famous restaurant on a boat practically under the bridge (The River Cafe) but I don't think that's Italian so it's a bit hard to imagine exactly where you ate. I know it's changed a bit around there with the new Brooklyn Bridge Park but I can't think of an Italian right there. Grimaldi's the famous brick oven pizza place is just up the road a bit and there are a couple more places doing pizza and trying to catch the ever present overflow from Grimaldi's so it's possible one of those used to be a real restaurant back then. Now-a -days I visit the area quite often but years ago not so much. The day I visited for this shot and several others was very foggy and the adverse weather conditions were great for photography and being able to capture views that were just a bit unique. I had gone off on my own and even taken my tripod for a change so I had all the time I needed to set up and think about what I was doing. I guess it paid off! I'm very pleased that it brought you back to leave such a great comment Lois, It has been an image that I've been very happy with but one can always use a little extra validation and coming from you it means a lot. Thank you so much.
